Functional textile manufacturers face a challenge: even freshly washed synthetic clothing takes on an undesirable odor after being worn for just a short time. This permanent odor on synthetic textiles is not caused by human sweat itself, but rather by the corresponding odor molecules that settle in the fibers. The result: Something known as permastink.

Textile manufacturers can prevent this effect by treating their textiles with OA 10, which prevents odor molecules from sticking to textile and causes odor produced during wear to be adsorbed and neutralized.

Isovaleric acid (IVA) a focus of testing

The DIN ISO 17299 standard allows four processes for substantiating the effectiveness of OA 10 or the reduction rate of defined odor molecules. This standard relates solely to textiles. SANITIZED chose measurement with gas chromatography (GC) in the ISO standard. When this process is used, declines in isovalerian acids (IVA), a main component of human sweat, are detected and measured:

  • Provision of two containers (here: Agilent GC-MS device with 30m pillar and headspace sampler)
  • A textile sample is set in each container: one sample is treated with Sanitized® OA 10 and one is untreated
  • The textile substrate is subjected to IVA incubation for a defined, fixed period of time
  • Measurement and comparison of the concentration of gaseous chemical odor components in both containers

The differential value determined in this way represents the reduction rate. Measurement results: The treated textile sample had up to 136 % greater odor adsorption. Thus, the test was successfully passed.

The effects of OA 10 can be clearly seen. While an untreated piece of textile adsorbs only 39 % of the added IVA amount the treated textile adsorbs 87 % (during treatment with 0.75 % OA 10) or 92 % (during treatment with 1.5 % OA 10).

This means that adsorption is increased by 123 % or 136 % over untreated textile.

OA 10 reduces the adhesion of odor molecules to textile fibers. Additionally, the next household wash will removes the few molecules that still remain and refreshes the effect. Effectively preventing the development of unpleasant odors over time.

The sustainable benefits for brands and consumers:

  • Minimized odor intensity while wearing
  • No permastink build-up on synthetic textiles
  • Longer textile lifecycle resulting in less textile waste
  • Low temperature washing at 30°C is sufficient
  • Reduced energy consumption due to shorter washing times
  • No nanotechnology
