Regulatory matters, i.e. legal and judicial provisions, are playing an increasingly important role in the production of textiles, polymers, paints and coatings – particularly for companies that operate in various countries or globally.

Which active ingredients are permitted? Which products meet the requirements in every target market in order to be authorized for sale there? Which labels do biocide-treated products need to comply with? These are some key questions, and the topic area is even more complicated: A distinction is made between an active ingredient, a product, and a treated article.

Active ingredients

Biocide active ingredients are substances that kill certain microorganisms or at least limit their vital functions. They are used in the non-agricultural space to fight harmful organisms (insects, fungi, bacteria, algae, etc.).

Biocidal product

A biocide product is a mixture that contains one or several biocide active ingredients and is intended to destroy, deter, neutralize, prevent action by or otherwise fight harmful organisms in a manner that differs from a mere physical or mechanical effect.

Treated article

A treated article comprises textiles, mixtures, or products that have been treated with one or several biocide products or that were deliberately exposed to biocide products.

Familiarity with regulations and advising customers

The European REACH chemicals regulation (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals in the EU), the European Biocidal Product Regulation (BPR), the U.S. FIFRA (Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act) biocide regulation from the EPA, and many other country-specific provisions make it more complex to choose the additives and active ingredients for treating goods in order to achieve integrated or material protection.

It is crucially important to also think about the regulatory aspects as early as during the design phase for the products and treated goods. And this is precisely where SANITIZED’s experts lend their support. Using their consistently up-to-date global knowledge, they advise in selecting compliant products that naturally meet the desired protection goals.

Safety is our core competence

Central to our corporate philosophy is responsibility and therefore ensuring safety for people and the environment. Our team is committed to the responsible handling of biocides. This not only ensures the safety of the treated articles and their users, but also the safety of the biocides and their processors, transportation and the environment. Producers of textile and plastic products as well as paints and varnishes have their own highly specialized team of experts at their disposal for safety-related and regulatory issues.

The companies that market the treated articles are responsible for complying with national regulations for treated articles, which is why the appropriate conformity confirmation should always be requested. You can find more on the topic here.

Only true experts who are always up to date on the continuously changing international developments can make reliable statements and act as advisors. The support that SANITIZED AG offers includes advising on which claim, i.e. which advertised product promise and which marketing claims are legally permissible.
